Constructs: Landscapes and Interiors

Gladys Poorte

January 6 - February 18, 2017

Reception: January 6, 2017; 6 - 9pm

My work represents interiors and landscapes which are the product of a long process of construction.  They originate from an impression, a light or a shadow observed in a fleeting moment, an intriguing object or two, a corner of a space, an event I observe. I go through a long search process to pin down the original idea, to materialize it, to build it.

I use different materials such a scardboard, paper, fabrics, wood, and populate it with found objects (hardware, toys, utensils, containers, plastic junk) or their parts, as well as objects I make myself.  I I combine the hand crafted with the manufactured.  It's like creating a stage where a story will unfold.

Originally these "sets" would serve as a starting point for paintings and drawings and when these were finished the constructs would be dismantled.  In the last couple of years the constructs have become pieces in their own right adding another dimension of meaning to the work.
